A Calm Presence Through It All

As a parent of teen and young adult children, I have been fully immersed in the rhythms of family life during the high school and college transition years. I understand the demands of high school, the expectations around college readiness, and the incredible personal growth that happens during these years. I bring calm to the college counseling process, and an organized approach that breaks things down into manageable steps. I think my biggest strength, however, is my ability to connect with the teens I work with as they navigate this wonderfully exciting journey.

  • Unlike school-based counselors who manage large caseloads, I work with a small number of families each year, providing personalized guidance throughout the college search, application, and decision-making process. In addition to strategic guidance and nuts and bolts admissions support, I serve as a steady third party, enabling parents to maintain a healthy and supportive relationship with their child during what can otherwise be a stressful time.

  • We begin with an initial consultation to discuss goals and determine how I can best support your family. Together, we develop a personalized plan with clear next steps. My process is flexible, enabling your student to get exactly the support they need throughout their college search and application process.

    In addition to hourly consulting, I also offer two stand-alone services to meet you where you are in the process:

    • A one-time 90-minute strategy session with an open agenda. Get targeted support where you need it most

    • Stand-alone essay review service. Receive two rounds of detailed feedback on any of your application essays: the personal statement, a personal insight question, or supplemental essay

  • It’s ideal to begin with a meeting as early as 9th or 10th grade to develop a high level roadmap and receive guidance for academic and extracurricular planning. For most students, the process takes shape during junior year, and continues through the fall of senior year. While it’s best to begin early, I work with students at every stage - and my flexible approach enables me to meet you wherever you are in the process.

  • Unlike package pricing, hourly consulting enables families to get just as much support as they need. Whether it’s comprehensive consulting from start to finish, or targeted guidance along the way, families pay only for services provided on their behalf. 

    I find that the level of support needed depends heavily on a student’s college list - something families won’t know when they are selecting a college consultant. Hourly consulting offers transparency and eliminates the guess work of selecting the appropriate level of support early in your student’s college process.

  • No, I have worked with students in Northern and Southern California, as well as on the east coast. I work with students both in person and virtually, enabling me to support families nationwide.

  • No ethical college consultant can guarantee admission outcomes. What I CAN do is help students highlight their strengths and share their unique stories with authenticity. I also help students build strategic college lists that include a realistic mix of reach, target, and likely schools. 

  • Yes. I work with students attending a wide range of institutions, including some of the most selective public and private colleges and universities. My aim, however, is not to help students gain admission to the most selective school possible; it is to help each student find colleges that are the best fit for them - academically, socially, and personally.

  • Artificial intelligence tools are reshaping almost every aspect of our lives - including the college application process. While I think AI can be used appropriately for certain pieces of the process, the ethics can get murky very quickly. A helpful guiding question is: “Would it be ethical to ask a trusted adult to perform the same task?” It’s important to keep in mind, however, that unlike a trusted adult, AI chatbots follow up each task with a tempting offer to do just a little bit more. I’ve adopted an AI policy that takes a more conservative approach, protecting the integrity of my students’ applications. My take is that AI has no place in the writing process, at any stage. It’s important to recognize that AI cannot capture a student’s authentic voice, values, character, or lived experiences - precisely the things colleges are looking for. 

    Here’s where I think AI can be very helpful during the college process:

    • Researching colleges and majors

    • Exploring campus-specific information to inform supplemental essays

    • Planning campus visit logistics

    • Checking spelling and grammar

  • Members of professional organizations such as the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA) adhere to the highest ethical standards, commit to ongoing professional development, and have access to a vast network of experienced colleagues for mentoring and ongoing support.
